2020 textile and apparel exports grow against the trend

2021-01-21

Contrary to the trend, an increase of 9.6%! According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs, in 2020, my country's textile and apparel exports totaled US$291.22 billion, which ended successfully with a year-on-year increase of 9.6%.
This transcript is hard-won and very eye-catching.
With the support of the “stabilizing foreign trade” policy, China’s textile and apparel exports have withstood the huge impact of the epidemic. Among them, textiles have achieved growth for 9 consecutive months since April, and clothing has reversed since August. Textile and clothing exports have achieved growth for five consecutive months, directly driving the overall export growth of national trade in goods by 1%, becoming an important driving force for the growth of national trade in goods.
The stable release of export competitiveness has benefited from the continuous improvement of consumer demand in overseas markets. However, the return of orders, and more importantly, the huge "magnetic attraction" formed by the stable industrial chain supply chain system of the domestic textile industry also reflects my country's textile industry from one side. The industry practice of in-depth adjustment and improvement of development quality.
In 2020, in the face of the challenge of the epidemic, how is the overall operation of my country's textile and apparel industry? As an important industry for improving people's livelihood, how can the textile and apparel industry achieve high-quality development during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period? Recently, the 15th China Textile Roundtable Forum hosted by the China National Textile and Apparel Council was held in Beijing. More than 100 experts and scholars from academia and industry gathered together to discuss the future development path of the textile and garment industry.
Domestic demand warms up, exports counterattack, and the textile industry's competitiveness is significantly enhanced
In recent years, the overall development of my country's textile industry has been in a stage of in-depth adjustment and transformation, focusing on improving the quality of development. In 2020, affected by the epidemic, the textile industry has also been affected. However, with the steady progress of domestic resumption of work and production, various operating indicators of the textile industry have shown a continuous upward trend. In the second half of the year, the domestic demand market of my country's textile industry has shown a clear trend of recovery.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the year-on-year decline in retail sales of clothing, shoes, hats, needles and textiles of units above designated size gradually narrowed from more than 30% at the beginning of the year to 7.9% in the first November.
Whether domestic demand has improved, companies feel the most obvious. While the domestic demand market is picking up, the export market has risen sharply. Driven by the export of anti-epidemic materials such as masks and protective clothing, the export competitiveness of my country's textiles has been steadily released, and the export scale is close to the industry's historical best level set in 2014.
Looking back on the "13th Five-Year Plan", China's textile industry is remarkable. In terms of scale, my country’s total fiber processing currently accounts for about 50% of the world’s total, chemical fiber output accounts for about 70%, and total exports account for about one-third. From the perspective of comprehensive capabilities, my country’s textile industry chain In terms of quality, production efficiency, independent process technology and equipment, it has generally reached the international advanced or leading level.
According to the report "Strategic Research on Promoting the Building of a Manufacturing Power towards 2035" issued by the Chinese Academy of Engineering not long ago, the textile industry has become one of the five major industries in my country in an advanced position in the world. Textile technology innovation has moved from "following" to a new stage where "following, running, and leading" coexist. To move towards high-quality development, we still need to make innovation stronger, manufacturing greener, and products better. Technological innovation is more "stronger", and it must be manufactured, but also refined and well manufactured.
