2021 textile and garment export growth against the trend

2021-09-25

Contrarian growth of 9.6%! According to the latest data released by the General Administration of customs, China's textile and garment exports totaled US $291.22 billion in 2021, ending with a year-on-year increase of 9.6%.

This report card is hard won and quite bright.

With the support of the policy of "stabilizing foreign trade", the export of China's textile and garment industry has withstood the huge impact brought by the epidemic, in which the textile has increased for 9 consecutive months since April and the garment has reversed since August. Textile and garment exports grew for five consecutive months, directly driving the overall export growth of national goods trade by 1 percentage point, becoming an important driving force for the growth of national goods trade.

The stable release of export competitiveness benefits from the continuous improvement of consumer demand in overseas markets, but the return of orders, more importantly, the huge "magnetic attraction" formed by the stable industrial chain supply chain system of domestic textile industry, also reflects the industrial practice of in-depth adjustment and improvement of development quality of China's textile industry from one side.

In 2021, facing the challenge of epidemic situation, what is the overall operation of China's textile and garment industry? As an important industry to improve people's livelihood, how can the textile and garment industry achieve high-quality development in the 14th Five Year Plan period? Recently, the 15th Annual Meeting of China Textile Roundtable forum hosted by China Textile Industry Federation was held in Beijing. More than 100 experts and scholars from academia and industry gathered together to discuss the future development path of textile and garment industry.

The domestic demand has warmed up and the export counter attack has significantly enhanced the competitiveness of the textile industry

In recent years, the overall development of China's textile industry is in the stage of in-depth adjustment and transformation and focusing on improving the quality of development. Affected by the epidemic in 2020, the textile industry has also been impacted. However, with the steady progress of domestic resumption of work and production, various operating indicators of the textile industry showed a continuous recovery trend, and the domestic demand market of China's textile industry showed an obvious recovery trend in the second half of the year.

According to the data of the National Bureau of statistics, the year-on-year decline in the retail sales of clothing, shoes, hats and knitwear textiles of units above the national quota gradually narrowed from more than 30% at the beginning of the year to 7.9% in the previous November.

Whether domestic demand has been improved is the most obvious for enterprises. While the domestic demand market warms up, the export market warms up sharply. Driven by the export of epidemic prevention materials such as masks and protective clothing, the export competitiveness of China's textiles has been released stably, and the export scale is close to the historical best level set by the industry in 2014.

Looking back on the 13th five year plan, China's textile industry is commendable.

In terms of scale, China's total fiber processing accounts for about 50% of the world, chemical fiber output accounts for about 70%, and total export accounts for about one third; From the perspective of comprehensive capacity, China's textile industry chain has generally reached the international advanced or leading level in terms of categories, varieties, output quality, production efficiency, independent technology and equipment.

According to the report on the strategic research on promoting the construction of a manufacturing power in 2035 issued by the Chinese Academy of engineering not long ago, the textile industry has become one of the five major industries in China in an advanced position in the world. Textile Scientific and technological innovation has entered a new stage of coexistence of "following, parallel and leading" from "following". To move towards high-quality development, we still need to make innovation stronger, manufacturing greener and products better. Scientific and technological innovation is more "strong", which should not only be made, but also be refined and good.
