What is The Test Results Difference If We use Different Methods to Test The Fire Retardant Fabric?

fire retardant fabric

It is an extremely complex process to test the fire retardant fabric's FR property, because there are too many burning factors affect the fire retardant fabric, and these factors are related. The FR property will be different even the same fire retardant fabric has different behaviors in the fire. Usually, these factors are: the form of the ignition source, the fire time, the location of the fabric and the fire etc. Different test methods will have different test results. The known test methods are Horizontal burning method, 45 ℃ combustion and vertical combustion method. In measuring the flame retardant properties of fire retardant fabric, we must specify the test methods and test conditions, the horizontal combustion method is the least strict method.

In the same finishing process, with 45 ℃ combustion test, if the flame can not burn through the fire retardant fabric timely, the fire will increase and spread to the fabric surrounding, the flame retardant effect is poor; with the vertical combustion method to test, if the flame retardant fabric can be formed when it is burned, it will help to prevent the flame spread, and the flame retardant effect will be better.

When using the 45 ℃ combustion method to determine the flame retardant fabric’s flame retardant properties, it is recommended to use melt-blown flame retardant, which is conducive to burn through the fabric in a relatively short period; and if we use the vertical combustion method to determine fire retardant fabric’s fire retardant properties, it is recommended to use carbon flame retardant, which is conducive to form a network-like non-flammable carbon layer in a short period of time to preventing the combustion.
